Ring Size Guide South Africa — How to Measure at Home

How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Finding your ring size accurately at home is straightforward. South Africa uses ring sizes measured in millimetres (internal diameter) or by circumference. At Orbit Rings, we size rings by internal circumference in mm, which aligns with standard European sizing also used by most SA goldsmiths.

Method 1: String or Paper Strip Method

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper or string approximately 10cm long.
  2. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you're sizing (not too tight — you should be able to slip it off with slight resistance).
  3. Mark where the strip meets itself with a pen.
  4. Measure the length from the end to the mark in millimetres — this is your circumference.
  5. Use the table below to convert circumference to ring size.

Method 2: Measure an Existing Ring

  1. Take a ring that fits the target finger correctly.
  2. Using a ruler, measure the internal diameter (inside edge to inside edge) in millimetres.
  3. Use the diameter column in the table below to find your size.

Ring Sizing Tips

  • Measure in the evening. Fingers are at their largest at the end of the day and in warm weather. A ring sized in the morning may be slightly tight by evening.
  • Temperature matters. Cold fingers are smaller. Measure at room temperature for the most accurate result.
  • Wider bands fit tighter. A comfort-fit band wider than 6mm typically needs to be ordered 0.5–1 size larger than a standard narrow band.
  • Dominant hand is larger. Most people's dominant hand is slightly larger. Measure the specific finger on the specific hand you'll wear the ring on.
  • If between sizes, round up. A ring that's slightly loose can be resized; a ring that's too tight is uncomfortable and may need replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ring Sizing

What ring size is most common in South Africa?

The most common men's ring size in South Africa is between 60 and 64 (using EU/mm sizing), corresponding to a finger circumference of 60–64mm. Women's ring sizes typically fall between 50 and 56. These are averages — measuring your own finger is always the most reliable approach.

How do I convert a UK ring size to South African sizing?

South Africa uses EU ring sizing (millimetre circumference). To convert a UK ring size to SA/EU sizing, refer to the chart above. For example, UK size O equals SA size 56 (17.8mm diameter / 56mm circumference). US size 7½ equals SA size 56.

Can Orbit Rings resize my ring if it doesn't fit?

Yes. Orbit Rings offers a free size exchange for life on all rings. If your ring doesn't fit correctly after delivery, return it and we'll replace it in the correct size at no cost, with no time limit. For gold rings, traditional resizing by our goldsmiths is also possible for larger adjustments.

Does ring size change over time?

Yes. Finger size can change with age, weight changes, pregnancy, temperature, and medication. A ring sized correctly at purchase may become too loose or tight years later. Orbit Rings' free lifetime size exchange covers any future size changes at no cost.

What if I'm between sizes?

If you're between ring sizes, round up to the larger size. A slightly loose ring is more comfortable than a slightly tight one, and it's easier to adjust. For comfort-fit bands wider than 8mm, size up by at least half a size from your measured circumference.
