Diamond 4Cs Explained — Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat

What Are the 4Cs of Diamonds?

The 4Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat — are the universal standard for grading diamond quality, developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the mid-20th century. Every IGI and GIA diamond certificate issued for diamonds sold by Orbit Rings includes a full 4Cs assessment. Understanding the 4Cs helps you make informed decisions about which quality factors to prioritise for your budget.

Cut: The Most Important of the 4Cs

Cut is the single most important factor in a diamond's appearance. A well-cut diamond maximises the reflection of light through its facets, creating brilliance (white light return), fire (coloured light dispersion), and scintillation (sparkle when the diamond moves). Cut grades on an IGI or GIA report are:

  • Excellent / Ideal — Maximum light performance. Highly recommended.
  • Very Good — Excellent light performance with minor efficiency trade-offs. Good value.
  • Good — Noticeably less brilliance than Excellent. Discount in price.
  • Fair / Poor — Significant light leakage. Avoid for gem-quality purchases.

Orbit Rings recommendation: Always choose Excellent or Very Good cut. The difference in visual appearance between an Excellent and a Good cut diamond is visible to the naked eye. Never sacrifice cut quality for carat size — a 0.9ct Excellent cut diamond looks better than a 1ct Good cut diamond.

Colour: Near-Colourless Is the Sweet Spot

The diamond colour scale runs from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Colourless grades (D, E, F) are the rarest and most valuable. Near-colourless (G, H, I, J) are excellent value — the colour difference between D and H is invisible to most observers without side-by-side comparison under controlled lighting.

Grade Category Visible to Eye? Relative Value
D, E, F Colourless No tint Highest
G, H, I, J Near-colourless Very slight tint (usually invisible in setting) Excellent value sweet spot
K, L, M Faint tint Visible in some settings Good for budget builds
N–Z Noticeable tint Yellow/brown visible Not recommended for gem rings

Orbit Rings recommendation: For white gold or platinum settings, choose G–I. For yellow gold settings, you can go as low as J or K — the gold warmth masks slight colour tints.

Clarity: Eye-Clean Is the Practical Standard

Diamond clarity measures the presence of inclusions (internal features) and blemishes (surface features). The IGI/GIA clarity scale:

  • FL, IF — Flawless / Internally Flawless. Extremely rare. Premium price.
  • VVS1, VVS2 — Very Very Slightly Included. Inclusions invisible at 10× magnification. Excellent.
  • VS1, VS2 — Very Slightly Included. Inclusions not visible to naked eye. Sweet spot for value.
  • SI1, SI2 — Slightly Included. SI1 inclusions are usually invisible to naked eye; SI2 may be visible. Good budget choice.
  • I1, I2, I3 — Included. Inclusions visible to naked eye. Not recommended for fine jewellery.

Orbit Rings recommendation: VS1–VS2 is the sweet spot — eye-clean at a significant discount to VVS. SI1 is excellent value if you're on a tighter budget and the specific stone is eye-clean (always request a report image).

Carat: Weight, Not Size

Carat is a measure of weight, not diameter. One carat equals 0.2 grams. A 1ct round brilliant diamond measures approximately 6.4–6.5mm across the top (table). However, two diamonds of the same carat weight can look quite different in facial size depending on their cut proportions. A well-cut 0.9ct diamond may have near-identical face-up size to a poorly cut 1ct.

Carat weight jumps (0.5ct, 0.75ct, 1ct, 1.5ct, 2ct) carry significant price premiums. A 0.95ct and a 1ct diamond may look identical visually, but the price difference can be 20–30%. Buying just below these thresholds is a smart value strategy.

The 4Cs Priority Ranking for Buyers

  1. Cut — Never compromise. Always Excellent or Very Good.
  2. Colour — G–I is the value sweet spot. D–F is prestige without visual benefit for most settings.
  3. Clarity — VS1–VS2 recommended. SI1 acceptable if eye-clean confirmed.
  4. Carat — Buy below round numbers. 0.9ct beats 1ct on value with near-identical appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions — Diamond 4Cs

Which of the 4Cs matters most?

Cut is the most important of the 4Cs. A diamond with excellent cut will outperform a higher-colour, higher-clarity diamond with poor cut. Cut determines how much light the diamond reflects — which is what makes it sparkle. Always prioritise Excellent or Very Good cut over higher colour or clarity grades.

What is a good clarity grade for a diamond ring?

VS1 or VS2 (Very Slightly Included) is the sweet spot. These diamonds have inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye and are significantly less expensive than VVS or Flawless grades. SI1 can also be eye-clean — verify with a certificate image or inspection before buying.

What color grade should I choose for a diamond?

G–H is the recommended colour range for white gold or platinum settings — near-colourless at a significant discount to D–F colourless grades. For yellow gold settings, I–J is acceptable because the warm gold colour masks any slight tint in the stone.

Is a 1 carat diamond significantly bigger than 0.9 carats?

No. A well-cut 0.9ct diamond measures approximately 6.2–6.3mm across, while a 1ct measures approximately 6.4–6.5mm — a difference of about 0.1–0.2mm that is barely perceptible. The price difference between 0.9ct and 1ct can be 20–30%. Buying 0.9ct instead of 1ct is typically excellent value.
